CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The final day of the Live 5 News Rise & Shine Summer Food Drive has arrived, bringing with it the final opportunity to help coastal children and their families combat food insecurity.
Live 5 has been partnering with the Lowcountry Food Bank since June 1 to reach a $50,000 fundraising goal.
The goal of raising $50,000 represents the estimated 50,000 children along the South Carolina coast who live with food insecurity every day.
Brenda Shaw, the chief development officer for the Lowcountry Food Bank, says that putting a focus on children during the summer is important as they are often able to get meals through school.
“So, in the summer especially, we don’t necessarily think about it, but kids are not getting the nutritious meals they get at school through free and reduced meals, and so we really want to make sure that we’re able to provide a little extra help to families in need during the summer,” Shaw says.
Donations of money and non-perishable breakfast items have been working all summer long to keep children fed and on track to succeed in the upcoming school year by putting food on the tables of struggling families.
Wednesday is the last day to donate and help the 16% of children throughout the coastal counties of South Carolina.
