LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Kentuckians, check your produce!
The FDA says a potential listeria contamination in one neighboring distributor is leading them to expand a once-smaller recall.
The FDA is recalling bulk produce distributed from Wiers Farm located in Ohio.
Some of the items that they are telling us to look out for are cilantro, cucumbers, green bell peppers and many more on this list.
This is a nationwide recall, but the stores that they’re telling you to look out for when buying from are Walmart and Kroger.
A few weeks ago, the FDA recalled only cucumbers from Wiers Farm, which’s since been updated in response to an investigation by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
If you come into contact with listeria you may feel these symptoms.
“Which would be potentially vomiting, diarrhea, pretty intense. It’s achy, and it’s with fever,” said pediatrician Dr. Katrina Hood.
Dr. Katrina Hood says those signs could appear in as soon as a day or two.
Food borne illness can be contracted just as simply as eating one of these listed items.
“Obviously, the big thing is really washing, and it’s not just a quick spray down with your faucet. It’s, you know, dunking it in water and that sort of thing so that it’s clearly washed,” said Dr. Hood.
She says that If you fall victim to this, it can be treated through medication.
However, for the time being, it’s best to steer clear of any potentially dangerous foods.
“For those who are at high risk, pregnant women, newborn babies, immunocompromised people or the elderly, just stay away from these foods,” said Dr. Hood.
The FDA has confirmed that there have been no illnesses or complaints reported to date.
