Pulled pork, hash, shredded chicken and coleslaw are some options North Augusta residents can get a taste of at a new barbecue truck.
Palmetto Smoke-House BBQ is a new barbecue food truck that specializes in Carolina-style barbecue. The truck, which is located at 1187 Edgefield Road, has been open since July.
“It makes you feel good when you see people coming back for more and more,” said Mike Powell, who is the owner and founder of Palmetto Smoke-House BBQ.
The truck sells pork and chicken-based items such as pulled pork, a shredded chicken sandwich, along with other items including coleslaw, mac and cheese, baked beans and potato salad.
Powell worked 30 years in law enforcement before he retired three years ago. He came out of retirement to start the business because he wanted to do something with his time and he kept talking about having a food trailer.
“I decided on something to do, my oldest granddaughter kind of pushed me,” he said. “She finally pushed me enough so we said, ‘Alright let’s do it.’”
The truck is also family-run and operated.
Powell said the trailer was purchased earlier in the year but it took him a while to get started because he had to get certified and had to do some work on the trailer to make it functional.
He said he mostly runs the truck by himself but does have assistance from family during the dinner service.
Powell said the homemade hash and the pulled chicken and pork are some of the top sellers.
He said what makes Carolina-style barbecue different is the kind of sauce the meat is cooked in. He said Carolina-style is mostly cooked in a vinegar-based sauce, which is based in North Carolina. Mustard-based sauces are mostly used in South Carolina barbecue, he said.
He said he cooks the pork butts in a vinegar-based sauce and those take about six hours.
He said coming up with a name for the business took a while because they went through many names, including his nickname of Pops, until he eventually settled on a name. He said the name palmetto is a play off of South Carolina since it’s the Palmetto state and smokehouse because the food truck has a smoker.
