With dozens of distilleries around the commonwealth, Kentucky’s prominence in the world of spirits can’t be denied, but sending — or receiving — one of the Bluegrass State’s most famous products is more difficult that you might think.
Local distilleries like Angel’s Envy can ship their products directly through customers, but people who purchase spirits from a shop or store while on a vacation may not easily be able to do the same.
Before you start ordering liquor in Kentucky, read up on the laws currently in place to save yourself a trip — or possible fines.
Can you send alcohol in the mail in Kentucky?
Public Protection Cabinet spokesperson Kristin Voskuhl said only businesses — including distilleries, wineries and breweries — can ship alcohol and must have a Kentucky direct-to-consumer shipping license. People receiving in-state products must also live in a wet county, or a county that allows alcohol sales.
Can Kentucky residents receive alcohol in the mail?
Alcohol producers outside of Kentucky must have a valid Kentucy DTC license to be able to send products to the commonwealth, Voskuhl said.
Recipients must also be 21 years or older and live in a wet county.
Can you mail bourbon in Kentucky?
The United States Postal Service does not allow alcoholic beverages to be sent through the mail, but courier services like UPS and FedEx allow shipments if the sender is a licensed vendor.
Can I resell alcohol online, on a phone app or in person?
Only individuals who have a license can resell alcohol through any means in Kentucky, according to the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
How old do I have to be to sell alcohol?
Any person, including a server, waiter or bartender, must be 20 years or older to sell, serve or accept payments for alcohol, according to the Kentucky ABC website.
Does Kentucky allow to return unopened alcohol packages?
Yes. According to the Kentucky ABC website, retail sellers may permit a consumer to return sealed alcoholic beverages packages purchased from that seller for a refund or exchange.
