IT’S TIME FOR NEWS TO GO. WE HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY’S TOP NEWS STORIES, THE TRAFFIC AND THE WEATHER. ALL BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT THE DOOR. WE START WITH OUR ISABEL MARIC, WHO IS HERE TO TELL US MORE ABOUT SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS AT SOME GREENVILLE SCHOOLS. AARON, DUSTIN, GOOD MORNING. YOU MAY REMEMBER BACK IN 2022 THAT THE CITY DID A STUDY ABOUT PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS. SINCE THEN, IT HAS IMPLEMENTED A PLAN CALLED VISION ZERO TO TRY TO ELIMINATE INJURIES AND DEATHS FROM PEDESTRIANS. NOW WE’RE RIGHT ON TENNESSEE AVENUE HERE, AND THIS IS ONE OF THE STREETS THAT THEY IDENTIFIED AS A POSSIBLE PROBLEM AREA. SO THAT’S WHY AUGUSTA CIRCLE ELEMENTARY IS PART OF THAT FIRST PHASE OF IMPROVEMENTS. LET ME CHECK MY NOTES RIGHT HERE TO INCLUDE ALL THE NUMBERS. THEY INCLUDE 63 NEW PEDESTRIAN RAMPS, MORE THAN 500YD OF SIDEWALK REPAIR, AND 59 NEW HIGH VISIBILITY CROSSWALKS. NOW THEY STARTED DOING THIS WORK BACK IN APRIL AND YOU CAN TAKE A LOOK UP THERE ON YOUR SCREEN FOR THE FULL LIST OF SAFETY FEATURES IN THE SCHOOLS THAT RECEIVED THEM. CITY OFFICIALS SAY THEY USE THE VISION ZERO STUDY TO CHOOSE THESE TEN CAMPUSES FOR THE PROJECT. THIS IS THE PART OF THE FIRST PHASE OF IMPROVEMENTS. OFFICIALS TELL US SAFETY IS A PRIORITY, AND THESE UPGRADES HELP EVERYONE FROM KIDS ON SCOOTERS OR BICYCLES TO PARENTS WITH STROLLERS. PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS AND EVEN CROSSING GUARDS. THE CITY SAYS THAT IT WILL BEGIN WORKING ON PHASE TWO HERE SOON. LIVE IN GREENEVILLE ISABEL MAREK, WYFF NEWS FOUR. WHEN WE STARTED FIGURING OUT THAT THERE WERE SOME KIDS OUTSIDE OF THOSE THREE CLASSROOMS THAT ALSO INCLUDED SOME OTHER GRADE LEVELS, A COUPLE OF THEM HAD EATEN LUNCH BOX FOOD, SO IT WASN’T STRICTLY OUT OF THE CAFETERIA. SO WE STARTED NARROWING OUT THAT IT DOES NOT APPEAR THAT IT IS ANYTHING FOOD RELATED. OFFICIALS IN LAWRENCE COUNTY ARE INVESTIGATING WHAT CAUSED NEARLY TWO DOZEN STUDENTS AND STAFF AT GREYCOURT ELEMENTARY MIDDLE SCHOOL TO GO HOME SICK YESTERDAY. WE’RE TOLD THE STUDENTS WERE SUFFERING FROM A SIMILAR SET OF SYMPTOMS, ACCORDING TO DISTRICT 55 SUPERINTENDENT JODY PENLAND. THE STUDENTS STARTED SHOWING SYMPTOMS AFTER LUNCH. THEY’RE NOW INVESTIGATING THE POSSIBILITY OF FOOD POISONING, WHICH IS STANDARD PRACTICE, BUT ALSO CONSIDERING THE POSSIBILITY OF A STOMACH VIRUS. VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS IS EXPECTED TO ANNOUNCE PLANS TO LOWER HOUSING COSTS. THE DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE WILL PROPOSE THE FOUR YEAR PLAN DURING HER FIRST ECONOMIC POLICY SPEECH IN NORTH CAROLINA TODAY. THE PLAN INCLUDES $25,000 IN DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE FOR FIRST TIME HOMEOWNERS. IN ADDITION, HARRIS IS EXPECTED TO CALL FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF 3 MILLION NEW HOUSING UNITS, INCLUDING TAX INCENTIVES FOR BUILDING STARTER HOMES. THE VICE PRESIDENT IS ALSO EXPECTED TO ANNOUNCE A FEDERAL BAN ON PRICE GOUGING TO LOWER THE COST OF FOOD. THE SECRET SERVICE IS PLANNING TO START PUTTING FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP BEHIND BULLETPROOF GLASS AT CAMPAIGN RALLIES. IT’S SOMETHING THAT’S COMMONLY DONE FOR SITTING PRESIDENTS, BUT FOR THEM, THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT CAN EASILY MOVE IT FROM EVENT TO EVENT USING AIRPLANES. THE SECRET SERVICE DOESN’T HAVE PLANES, SO THEY’RE PLANNING TO STORE IT IN VARIOUS AREAS AROUND THE COUNTRY WHERE FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP IS EXPECTED TO VISIT. THAT ALL COMES A MONTH AFTER AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON THE FORMER PRESIDENT IN PENNSYLVANIA. AROUND $60 MILLION WILL BE USED TO BUILD A NEW SPORTS AND EVENT CENTER IN THE CITY OF GREER. OFFICIALS SAY IT’S PART OF THEIR FOR GREER INITIATIVE. CITY OFFICIALS SAY THE LOCATION’S PROXIMITY TO THE AIRPORT IN DOWNTOWN MAKE IT AN IDEAL SPOT TO BUILD. THE CENTER COULD BRING IN TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN ECONOMIC IMPACT. MAYOR RICK DANNER SAYS THE FACILITY WILL MORE LIKELY FEATURE A GYMNASIUM WITH MULTIPLE BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL AND PICKLEBALL COURTS. CITY ADMINISTRATOR ANDY MERRYMAN SAYS OFFICIALS ARE TALKING ABOUT WHAT ELSE COULD FIT. OFFICIALS HOPE TO BREAK GROUND ON THE CENTER IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS AND HAVE IT COMPLETED WITHIN THE NEXT FOUR. I FEEL LIKE WE NEED A SUNRISE SHOT. AS WE’RE SAYING, THIS NEXT STORY. ONE OF THE MOST BELOVED MUSICALS OF ALL TIME IS COMING BACK TO GREENVILLE HIGH. YEAH. DISNEY’S LION KING WILL RETURN TO THE PEACE CENTER NEXT MONTH. THE MUSICAL HAS BEEN TOURING NORTH AMERICA FOR ABOUT 22 YEARS, MAKING IT NORTH AMERICA’S LONGEST RUNNING AND MOST ATTENDED BROADWAY TOUR. OUR SYDNEY SHADRIX SPOKE TO THE ACTOR, WHO PLAYS SCAR, ABOUT WHY THE STORY HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN THE HEARTS OF SO MANY. YOU KNOW, WHEN WE’RE KIDS, WE CAN RELATE TO THE YOUNG KIDS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE OPTIMISM OF LIFE AND EVENTUALLY ADVERSITY IS GOING TO HIT US IN OUR LIFE AND WE’RE GOING TO DEAL WITH GRIEF AND WE’RE GOING TO DEAL WITH LOSS. AND THOSE ARE PRIMAL HUMAN THINGS THAT WE FEEL. AND TO SEE THAT REPRESENTED ON STAGE AND TO SEE THAT DEALT WITH AND OVERCOME EVERY NIGHT, THAT BECOMES MEANINGFUL TO PEOPLE AT ANY STAGE OF THEIR LIFE. YOU CAN SEE DISNEY’S THE LION KING AT THE PEACE CENTER IN DOWNTOWN GREENVILLE SEPTEMBER 11TH THROUGH THE 29TH. THOSE TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW. GRIFFIN. HE WAS SAYING SCARS. YEAH. I’M SURROUNDED. I DON’T WANT TO RUIN IT. GO SEE IT FOR YOURSELF. ALL RIGHT, SO HERE’S A LOOK AT THAT. HILTON GREENVILLE SKYCAM TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE THIS MORNING. UPPER SECONDS AND LOW 70S. NICE QUIET START. NOT MUCH OF ANY RAIN. WE DO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF FOG SHOWING UP IN THE MOUNTAINS UP TOWARDS MACON COUNTY AND SWAIN COUNTY. VISIBILITY DOWN TO 8/10 OF A MILE UP IN FRANKLIN AND AGAIN, NO RAIN AS OF YET, BUT I’M WATCHING SOME. THAT’S OVER TOWARDS THE MIDWEST. THIS LITTLE CLUSTER OF SHOWERS AND STORMS HERE, THIS IS EVENTUALLY GOING TO MAKE ITS WAY DOWN INTO THE UPSTATE LATER THIS EVENING. PLAN ON SOME POSSIBLE RAIN IF YOU’RE HEADED OUT AND ABOUT. WELL, IN THE AFTERNOON FOR WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA, THAT CHANCE OF RAIN IS THERE FROM AROUND 1 P.M. TO 7 P.M. AND THEN FOR THE UPSTATE. NOT MUCH DURING THE AFTERNOON. TODAY IT’S MOSTLY GOING TO BE JUST A LITTLE STRAY SHOWER HERE AND THERE AS TEMPERATURES TOP OUT, PROBABLY AROUND 90 DEGREES. BUT THEN AGAIN LATER TONIGHT IS WHEN YOU’LL PROBABLY WANT TO BRING YOUR WET WEATHER GEAR. IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE OUT LATE THIS EVENING, HIGHS TODAY LOOK LIKE THIS 90. IN MANY PLACES. WALHALLA, CLEMSON, ANDERSON, 91, IN GREENVILLE AND SPARTANBURG, 89 FOR LAURENS AND GREENWOOD. WE’LL TALK ABOUT THE REST OF THE WEEKEND’S FORECAST. ONE FINAL CHECK ON YOUR FOUR-DAY PLUS IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. DESTINY, OVER TO YOU. ALL RIGHT. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME SLOWDOWNS RIGHT NOW. HERE’S A LIVE LOOK AT I-85 AT MAULDIN ROAD IN GREENVILLE COUNTY. LOOK AT THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF YOUR SCREEN RIGHT THERE. YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE ARE SLOWDOWNS RIGHT NOW. WE’RE NOT SURE THE CAUSE OF IT AT THIS PARTICULAR MOMENT, BUT IF YOU ARE HEADED TOWARDS MAULDIN ROAD, DEFINITELY GIVE YOURSELF SOME TIME THIS MORNING TO GET OUT THE DOOR. ALSO, YOUR TRAVEL TIMES, AIRPORT THROUGH ON WOODRUFF ROAD YOU’RE LOOKING AT A 14 MINUTE DRIVE, A LITTLE SLOWER THIS TIME OF MORNING. I-240 TO ASHEVILLE HIGHWAY. 11 MINUTES FAIRVIEW ROAD TO DOWNTOWN, 13 MINUTES. OH YEAH, A NUMBER OF WAYMO AUTONOMOUS CARS HAVE BEEN PARKING IN A SAN FRANCISCO LOT. NEIGHBORS SAY THE DRIVERLESS CARS FILE INTO THE LOT AND BACK INTO SPOTS, WHICH APPEARS TO TRIGGER HONKING FROM THE OTHER WAYMO’S IN A STATEMENT, WAYMO SAYS THEY’RE AWARE OF THE ISSUES AND ARE IN THE PROCESS OF IMPLEMENTING A FIX. SO TICKLED BY THIS, ERIN. I LOVE IT. I NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE IN MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE, AND IT’S SO FUN. AND I LIKE GETTING DIRTY SOMETIMES. AN EIGHT YEAR OLD BOY STOLE THE SHOW AT ONE OF THE PIE EATING CONTESTS AT THE IOWA STATE FAIR. ZACH LUCAS TOOK THE CROWD. YOU CAN SEE HIM RIGHT THERE IN THE ORANGE SHIRT WITH A FACE FULL OF CHOCOLATE PIE. IT WAS HIS FIRST COMPETITION AND HE SAYS THE CHOCOLATE TASTED. QUOTE, SO GOOD. COULDN’T AGREE MORE. THE IOWA STATE FAIR ENDS ON SUNDAY. WHO ARE THE ONES HOLDI
