LINCOLN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – As students return to school this month, Kentucky school districts are offering free breakfast and lunch to students.
One district offering free food is Lincoln County.
Free breakfast and lunch are being offered to all students in some school districts including Lincoln County, as part of a national program.
The free food is part of a USDA federal program that began seven years ago.
Educators say they notice a difference between kids that are well nourished and those that are hungry.\
“Gets them awake, gets them started. Less discipline problems. Better attendance. Students are going to stay away through the day” says Cathy Hettmansperger of Lincoln County Schools.
In addition to the free breakfast and lunch, students in the elementary schools are allowed to take fruits and vegetables at the end of the school day.
