If it’s food you’re looking for, our food team is here to help, no matter how specific the request. This week, we heard from readers on the hunt for barbecue, a childhood soda fountain favorite and restaurant recommendations in the northern suburbs.

Here are answers to a few recent Ask Eat Drink D-FW reader questions.

    BBQ recommendations around Fort Worth

Q: I have relatives visiting Texas for the first time and are staying at the Gaylord in Grapevine. Locating for good BBQ restaurants in that area or near Ft. Worth. — Robert, Lancaster

My fellow food reporter Sarah Blaskovich is our resident barbecue brain trust, so I tapped her for your question, Robert. Here’s what she had to say:

    Eat Drink D-FW

The latest food and drink reviews, recipes and info on the D-FW food scene.

“You’re in luck! I believe Texas’ best barbecue is situated in and around Fort Worth, so you’ve picked a great spot. We’ve called Fort Worth the barbecue capital of Texas. The most time-consuming option is the best: Goldee’s Barbecue. Texas Monthly listed it as Texas’ best barbecue joint in 2021, and basically the whole world wants to eat there. It opens at 11 a.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. To be sure you get food, you might want to show up at 9:30 a.m. and wait. I know how silly that might sound. If you don’t have hours to dedicate to this barbecue journey, check out Brix, Dayne’s, Panther City and Smoke-A-Holics instead. Brix is my current favorite because the menu branches out from the must-get brisket to tacos, hot chicken and a cheeseburger.”

A long lost soda fountain classic

Q: When I was a kid in the 1960s we lived in Wichita Falls, Tx. Our favorite soda fountain treat was something called a Cherry Lime. This is NOT the same as a Cherry limeade, like you can find at Sonic. It was delicious and refreshing, clear in color with lime juice or lime flavoring, and carbonated water, and I’m guessing some simple syrup, plus some kind of cherry flavoring. I don’t know for certain, but I’m pretty sure the drink wasn’t cherry-colored, just clear. I never see this drink any more, but it was so perfect and so good. Any help, even a recipe to make one at home, would be greatly appreciated. – LouAnn, Lewisville

I spent some time reading and researching to figure out what this drink was, and I can say confidently that I think what you’re referring to is called a Cherry Lime Rickey. Turns out this drink, once a soda fountain staple across the country, was one of the O.G. mocktails. It rose to prominence during the prohibition and was a non-alcoholic take on the Gin Rickey. The drink is made with fresh lime juice, cherry or simple syrup and seltzer.

Like you, LouAnn, I wasn’t able to find this on menus anywhere, but I have good news. I called up the Dougherty’s Pharmacy soda fountain in Dallas and talked with one of the owners, Ramiro. He said he had never heard of the drink but that he’s going to study up so he’ll be prepared to make it for you or anyone else who comes in and asks for one. I also called Beth Marie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream since they have a location closer to you in Carrollton, and they said they have all the ingredients needed to make one and would happily do so. I double checked that they have fresh lime juice, not from concentrate, since that seems to be key to a good Cherry Lime Rickey.

As for making one yourself, here’s a recipe from A Couple Cooks and another from Food Network that uses lime concentrate instead of fresh juice.

    Where to eat near Fairview

Q: We just moved to Fairview from Dallas and are looking for great places to eat up here that aren’t Italian, as I’ve noticed the best spots serve Italian. Any suggestions? We love fine dining as well as weekday spots.-preferably not chains. — Connie, Fairview

You’re not far from downtown McKinney, so I’d point you to Local Yocal BBQ and Grill, Cadillac Pizza Pub, Harvest at the Masonic, Rick’s Chophouse and Hutchins BBQ. And a good lunch spot is Hugs Cafe, which serves sandwiches and salads and employs adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For breakfast and brunch, check out Fairview Farmers. This is a family owned and operated spot that sources ingredients from local farms.
