Why This KY City Is Called the ‘Batter Capital of the World’

Someone once asked me to name my five favorite dishes, and I began with spaghetti. That will always be number one in my book. For the rest of the top five, I had to think a minute.

When all was said and done, biscuits and gravy came in second, and maybe a close second, at that. In fact, there are times when I crave biscuits just so I can have gravy. Yes, I love gravy, but I’m not going to sit down with a spoon and eat it like soup.

And, of course, I can run to the store and grab a can of biscuits to satisfy that craving, but there’s nothing like ordering them at specific restaurants. For me, Cracker Barrel wins the day in this category. In the fast food category, I’m partial to McDonald’s biscuits.

Interestingly, both of these chains’ locations east of the Mississippi River owe their biscuit-making prowess to Kentucky’s 11th-largest city. That’s right; Hopkinsville KY is known as the Batter Capital of the World.

But maybe your tastes swing more toward pancakes or brownies. (Oh come on, who am I kidding? Everyone likes BISCUITS, but you know what I mean.)

If that’s the case, know that Krusteaz Pancake Mix is also made in Hopkinsville. Ghirardelli’s mouth-watering brownies wouldn’t be possible, either, without Hoptown.

The Batter Capital of the World is also responsible for one of the finest restaurant creations known to man:

I could eat five right now.

Anyway, it’s all about the wheat and a LOT of it. Hopkinsville churns out more than three million bushels of wheat annually, and without it, the aforementioned companies would be unable to create signature products.

So, all us biscuit, pancake, and brownie lovers would be justified in making an annual pilgrimage to Hopkinsville.
