NEW YORK — Shake Shack, the popular fast-food chain known for its hamburgers, fries and milkshakes, is closing nine underperforming locations nationwide, including one in Ohio, reports say.
Nation’s Restaurant News reports the chain made a filing with the Securities & Exchange Commission identifying the underperforming company-owned locations in California, Ohio, and Texas. The filings said the problems were “in part due to changes in the trade area and, in some cases, are negatively impacting other Shacks within their proximity by cannibalizing sales.”
The Shake Shack in the Polaris Fashion Place in Columbus is one of the locations slated to close by Sept. 25, Fast Company reports.
The other locations are in Oakland, Calif.; the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Bunker Hill, Culver City, Koreatown, Silverlake, and the Westfield Topanga Mall; and the Galleria mall and Montrose neighborhood in Houston, Texas, reports say.
Shake Shack reportedly has more than 500 locations worldwide, including four in the Cleveland area: Westlake, downtown Cleveland, Warrensville Heights and Hopkins International Airport.
Nation’s Restaurant News reports the closures are not expected to impact the company’s overall expansion plans. No other closures are expected “in the near future,” reports say.
