A Mid-City donut and ice cream shop have announced their closures ahead of some changes to the building to make room for a new business.
Blue Dot Donuts owner announced Wednesday on social media that the popular neighborhood spot would close before Labor Day weekend, leaving fans only a few days to get at least one more box of donuts.
Owner Zach Menicucci thanked all “the Blue Dot Family,” current and former employees, former owners and the community that supported it all.
“We will truly miss all the shared laughs, the hot gossip, the theorized ‘answer’ to the Saints, the baby’s first donuts, the first day of school donuts and, of course, the donut holes we sneak to your dogs,” Menicucci said in his post.
Menicucci shared that he is closing as he transitions into a new consulting career.
The first gig he accepted was to work with The Bayou Bagel Company as they prepared to open a shop in Uptown. People may be familiar with the bagel company because the bagels are available at Zuppardo’s, Dorignac’s, and a few other retailers in the New Orleans area.
Blue Dot’s back porch neighbor, Laozi Ice Cream (pronounced like lousy), also announced on Wednesday its temporary closure that started Thursday while it looks for a new home. Sam Caruso has made his French-style ice cream for over three years and has built up a dedicated fan base.
He made it clear in his social media post that he plans to find a new home as soon as possible to keep serving up his creative ice cream concoctions.
With Laozi moved out and Blue Dot closing on Aug. 29, what’s next for the space at 4303 Canal St.? Well, renovations are expected to begin for a new coffee shop and bakery to serve the Mid-City community, Menicucci confirmed.
