Houston’s food scene always has a lot going on, but not every bit of news that we get qualifies for a full article. However, that does not mean that it’s not useful. We often hear about deals, events such as wine dinners, limited time menu items, culinary classes and new dishes. “Small Bites” rounds up these tasty little morsels to keep you on top of what’s going on in Houston.

This Week (Through Sunday, August 11)

Monday, August 5: Grab Deals Around Town for National Oyster Day

Eugene’s Gulf Coast at 1985 Welch is offering 25% all of its oyster dishes for National Oyster Day, noting, “That’s like getting three free oysters in every dozen”. The restaurant is open on Monday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch and 5 to 10 p.m. for dinner. Happy hour is from 4 to 7 p.m.

H Town Restaurant Group locations Caracol at 2200 Post Oak Boulevard in the Galleria area and Xochi at 1777 Walker in downtown Houston are both offering oyster happy hour deals all day long. At Caracol, that means you can linger over Ostiones Asados, wood-roasted Gulf oysters topped with chipotle butter, cheese and toasted breadcrumbs for $15 for a half-dozen or $30 for a dozen, or Ostiones en su Concha, raw oysters on the half-shell, for $12 for a half-dozen or $24 for a dozen. At Xochi, the oyster offerings are Ostiones de Lujo, wood-roasted oysters with mole amarillo, cotija and breadcrumbs for $15 a half-dozen or $30 a dozen, and Ostiones en su Concha, raw oysters on the half-shell, for $12 for a half-dozen or $24 for a dozen.

Both Liberty Kitchen & Oysterette locations at 4224 San Felipe in River Oaks and 963 Bunker Hill in Memorial are offering Gulf Coast oysters for just a dollar each while supplies last. The special is good all day, and the hours at the River Oaks location are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Memorial location also opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m.

Wednesday, August 7: Indulge in Tacos AND Free Cake

It’s Velvet Taco’s 13th anniversary. To mark the day, they’re calling it, “National Velvet Day” and offering customers who wear a velvet garment or accessory (even if it’s just a bracelet or a hair wrap) a free slice of red velvet cake with any purchase. If you want to try your hand at making your own at home, you’re in luck, as the company is sharing its recipe.

Thursday, August 8: Get in on the First Day of a Fashionable Ice Cream Collaboration

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is collaborating with streetwear brand The Hundreds
Starting on August 8, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is collaborating with streetwear brand The Hundreds.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is collaborating with streetwear brand The Hundreds on both a special ice cream flavor and T-shirt. Both will be available starting on August 8. The limited-time flavor is called Bastani Sonnati. The traditional Persian ice cream is an homage to The Hundreds founder Ben Hundreds’ heritage, and made with saffron, rose water and pistachios, while the retro-style T-shirt features The Hundreds’ “Adam Bomb” design. Once the promotion starts on August 8, the T-shirt will also be available to buy on both Jeni’s and The Hundreds’ websites.

Next Week — Monday, August 12 Through Sunday, August 18

8/17: Attend a Big Wine-Tasting Event That Helps an Orphanage

On Saturday, August 17, perpetual Houston-area host Food & Vine Time Productions is putting on its annual Cheers For Charity wine-tasting event at the Red Oak Ballroom in the Norris Conference Center at 816 Town & Country Boulevard. The event happens from 4 to 7 p.m. — unless you hold VIP tickets, in which case, you can enter at 3 p.m. The event will have over 100 wines to taste from more than 25 different wineries. There will also be a live auction, silent auction and Stock Your Cellar Raffle. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to 20 different orphanages serving over 2,000 children.

8/17: Take a Road Trip to Bryan to Learn Fish Cookery

On August 17 from noon to 3:30 p.m., chef and owner Brian Light of Ronin Restaurant at 800 North Main in Bryan is teaching a class on how to prepare fish. The event includes a meal; drinks are available for separate purchase. The cost is $75 plus Eventbrite fee ($79.57 total) per attendee. Tickets are available online. (If you were wondering, yes, we do think chef Light’s talents merit a road trip from Houston.)

Happening in Houston All of August 2024

    Houston Restaurant Weeks 2024

It’s August, and that means everyone’s favorite dining-for-charity month is happening now. In addition to diners enjoying special fixed-price meals at hundreds of restaurants for lunch, brunch or dinner, every Houston Restaurant Weeks meal ordered benefits the Houston Food Bank or a food bank in the vicinity of the restaurant. For more information and sample menus, check out our overview of this year’s Houston Restaurant Weeks.

You can even adorn yourself with floral temporary tattoos. Special brunch dishes include Maple Banana French Toast, Tuscan Eggs Benedict with smoked tomato hollandaise, Top My Toast Board with all the fixing and Strawberries & Cream featuring a toasted almond chiffon cake.

Drinks feature DAOU Frozé, the Pop-Mosa — a mimosa made with Sesenta Cava that comes with a JonnyPops organic popsicle and the Rosé Bouquet Wine Flight with Diseño Rosé, M. Chapoutier Rosé and DAOU Rosé.

Dine Out & Raise Funds to Feed Kids in Need

Until the end of August, Jonathan’s The Rub is offering special brunch and lunch meals that raise money for Kids’ Meals, Inc., which fills a gap in feeding kids in challenging situations who are not old enough to benefit from free school lunch programs. Kids Meals Inc. delivers nutritious meals to these kids every weekday.  For each brunch or lunch ordered from Jonathan’s The Rub’s special Kids Meals Inc. menu, $3 will be donated. For every dinner ordered, the donation amount increases to $5.

It’s a bucket of drinks and snacks with High Noon Seltzers, Celsius Energy Drinks, Chex Mix and Sahale Snacks. To complete the rockstar scenario, call your friends and reserve a poolside cabana. Through Summer 2024

Enjoy Half-Priced Smash Burgers In Montrose

New Montrose bar Jethro’s Cocktail Lounge, located at 95 Tuam across the street from Elro, is now offering half-off single-patty smash burgers every Tuesday from open to close. These are regularly $10.50, so that makes the cost a mere $5.25. Jethro’s smash burger consists of a crispy-edged smashed patty made from a blend of Angus brisket, short rib and chuck served with house spread, pickles and American cheese on toasted brioche buns. An order or fries costs $4, and you can add sautéed onions for $1.50 or ranch for $1.

Donate at Logan’s Roadhouse to Help Give Veterans Service Dogs

Through the summer, donate $5 at any Logan’s Roadhouse to K9s For Warriors. You’ll receive a bounce-back card good for $10 off your next $40 purchase, but more importantly, you will help match a veteran with a service dog in need of a home. That sounds like a big win for everyone involved. Bounceback cards become valid 12 hours after receipt and expire on November 10. By the way, if you are a veteran or active duty military, show your military ID at any time of the year for a 10% discount.
