COLUMBIA — The new location of Steel Hands, coming to the former space of Twisted Spur Brewing in the Vista, is set to craft small batch spirits on top of brewing beer.
The move to offer more than just beer is a first for the brand, which started as a craft brewery and taproom in Cayce. The upcoming location, at 705 Gervais St., will be the second in the Columbia-area and the third overall, following the brewery’s expansion into North Carolina two years ago.
The new location was initially reported in late June when the company filed an application with the state’s revenue department for an alcohol license, but little was known about the project itself.
“We’re excited to unveil this new concept to our Steel Hands fans with the opening of our third location. Venturing into spirits has long been a dream for our team, and this allows us to expand our portfolio of products,” Ashley Lambert, the brewery’s marketing director, said in a press release.
In the 5,000 square-foot space, which held Twisted Spur until it closed sometime in the summer of last year, Steel Hands will operate a restaurant and bar that can seat around 160 people. It’ll also distill, blend and bottle a variety of liquors, including vodka and gin.
An opening date for the new location has not yet been announced, the press release said.
The second Columbia location comes amid a handful of closures for longtime breweries — in December, River Rat, one of the city’s remaining original breweries, closed down after a decade in business, following a string of other well-loved spots.
Steel Hands has leaned into a successful distribution model and grew its regional reach to Greensboro, N.C., in the spring of 2022 when it opened a taproom near UNC Greensboro’s basketball stadium.
