Houston Restaurant Weeks has been extended until the end of September in an effort to raise funds for businesses affected by Hurricane Beryl and the May Derecho.
Restaurants participating in Houston Restaurant Weeks donate $3, $5 or $7 to the Houston Food Bank for each meal served. With the extension, restaurants will only need to donate $1 per meal sold to benefit the food bank. The event is the largest annual fundraiser for the food bank.
“Because of the devastation from the two storms this summer, many restaurants have suffered significant loss,” according to the organization. “This extends well beyond business owners and the many thousands of people the industry employs.”
The event has extended three times and generated more than $21 million since its startup in 2003. Menu prices at participating restaurants range from $25 to $55 during the event.
“After discussions with owners, operators and the Houston Food Bank the decision was made to keep HRW going until the end of September with a reduced donation amount,” Katie Stone, president of the Cleverley Stone Foundation said in a statement.
“HRW has proven to be an annual traffic generator for the industry and this seemed like a positive decision for those who have supported us for 21 years,” Stone said.
Since its opening, the foundation has gathered over $18.8 million, which equates to 56.4 million meals that went to help relieve food insecurity, according to its website. It also expanded to a month-long event to maximize the benefits.
New Houston area restaurants participating in the event this year include 1891 America Eatery & Bar, Auden and Le Jardinier.
