President Joe Biden and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-LA, have very little in common when it comes to politics.
They have sparred in recent months about immigration, the economy, Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race and more. But when it comes to the universal language of food, chargrilled oysters apparently transcend all of those ideological boundaries.
While in New Orleans to tout their cancer research initiative, Biden and the first lady made a stop at Drago’s Seafood Restaurant, a storied Metairie eatery that also happens to be a well-known favorite of Scalise.
Reached for his reaction to the Bidens moving in on his favorite restaurant, Scalise gave his approval, texting, “If President Biden has some charbroiled oysters, he may not want to leave New Orleans!”
The president’s party did indeed try Drago’s specialty oysters during their early dinner, along with fried shrimp, alligator, fish and even a cheeseburger.
Scalise’s love for the restaurant and its signature dish is widely known. The second-highest ranking House Republican is friends with Drago’s owner Tommy Cvitanovich and even hosted dinner at the seafood spot in 2020 following his reelection.
In 2017, after Scalise was shot and seriously injured when a gunman opened fire at a practice session for the annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity, Cvitanovich organized a meal train of New Orleans food to be sent to the congressman as recovered.
The deliveries, of course, included chargrilled oysters.
