CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – It’s been four days since hundreds of thousands of people in Northeast Ohio lost power.
Forcing many to throw away valuable items, including food.
Patrick Keller took his daughter to Walter Stinson Community Park on Saturday morning, to throw all of their food away after Tuesdays storms knocked out their power.
“Losing food is never fun,” said Keller. “Especially when you go grocery shopping on Sunday and lose everything on Tuesday”.
Keller told 19 News his power came back on Thursday, but he had to utilize University Heights’ community spoiled food site to get rid of 6 bags of food that didn’t survive the outage. A problem Natasha Adkisson, a volunteer at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank Resource Center, knows well.
” I didn’t like the idea of throwing away any food,” explained Adkinsson. “So we cooked as much as we could and me and my daughter shared with the grandkids”.
Adkinsson tells 19 News she will spend her day in the market helping others replace the food they lost, and after her shift, she will do the same.
“You never know when you’re going to be the person in need for food or for help or assistance,” said Adkinsson.
The Vice President of Community Access tells 19 News the Market saw more people this weekend than they usually do.
“Today we actually arrived to about 100 neighbors waiting for us before we even opened the doors, “ said Tiffany Scruggs. “Which is an increase that we’re expecting to see as people’s power is restored”.
The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is ramping things up as people recover from the storms.
They just received $100,000 from First Energy.
With that money they’ve packed up 2,000 shelf-stable grocery boxes and 1,000 shelf-stable meals.
Next week, they’ll continue to provide food for those who need a little extra help starting Monday at 7am.
You can reach them at their call center at 216-738-2067
