GRAY COURT, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Laurens County School District 55 is investigating after a sudden illness impacted a school on Thursday.
After a number of staff and students at Gray Court-Owings School became sick midday, the district and firefighters evacuated students to investigate possible carbon monoxide poisoning. However, the Laurens Fire Department ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of illness.
After-school events were cancelled Thursday to protect the safety of students and staff.
On Friday, the South Carolina Department of Health reviewed the case of sudden illnesses and found there is no evidence of contaminated food or food poisoning.
The school district said overnight deep cleaning was completed on Thursday and will resume on Friday.
The investigation into the illness is ongoing.
