Yes, the main draw of Outside Lands is always the music, but, respectfully, the food is a powerhouse in its own right. The event never fails to attract big-name chefs and locally beloved restaurants in a three-day collision of music, food, and drink at Golden Gate Park. While that’s not news to previous attendees of Outside Lands, the festival continues to level up its food and drink game each year with tempting new food and drink vendors, plus some new initiatives to keep things exciting.
This year is no exception as there’s an all-new food program for visitors to buy into: Bites of the Bay is a $20 add-on that gives access to special snack-sized bites from 77 participating restaurants. With purchase of Bites of the Bay, members will receive a map and a full list of the secret snack menu items and pricing. Tanya Kollar, food curator at Outside Lands, says the idea for Bites of the Bay came out of her personal goal to try as many menu items as possible each year. “If I’m snacking through the food lineup with a friend we can share each item, but often I venture out alone and can’t possibly finish multiple full-sized menu items by myself,” Kollar said in a statement. “This got me thinking — what if our restaurant partners offered snack-sized versions of their menu items for people like me who are on a quest to sample as much of the food at Outside Lands as possible?”
That’s a fair take for those of us who treat Outside Lands food and drink as the sport that it is. Along with the exclusive map, Bites of the Bay members will receive a booklet of 20 snack passes, where each pass gives access to one item for purchase. Imagine it: A single quesabirria taco with consommé from El Garage, a mini pizza from Mozzeria, a halved muffuletta slice from Sandy’s, a mini lobster roll from Woodhouse Fish Co., arayes pita burger bite from Dalida, and more. Among Kollar’s favorite Bites are the mee goreng noodles from Azalina’s, but also Kantine’s mini pølsehorn pastry-wrapped hot dog, mini camembert baguette from Pantry Pigeons, and a mini cookie dough sundae from Out the Dough. Smaller bites mean stomach room to sample more… right?
Beyond Bites of the Bay, there are six limited-edition treats available without the need to secure an additional pass — you’ll just have to be quick. Gamify tracking down these items and turn it into a makeshift scavenger hunt, with a chance to beat out fellow concertgoers to the (food) punch. The dishes veer into the fantastical and wild, such as Sorrel’s sweet corn Basque cheesecake with alliums and caviar with just 10 available each day for $48 each. Other items are a bit more accessible, such as pop-up My Friend Fernando’s team-up with Oakland’s Burdell for a hush puppy elote made with masa and dressed with grilled corn salsa priced at $20 (limited to 50 orders a day). The full list is below. Happy food hunting.
